Carrie Winter - Class Of 1919

Carrie Winter, 80 died Sunday October 23, 1983 in Richland Memorial Hospital. A memorial service held at First Presbyterian Church with Pastor David McNabb presiding. The body was made a gift to Medical Science.

Miss Winter was born February 11, 1903 in Richland County, the daughter of William and Martha (LaRou) Winter.

She was a member and trustee of the First Presbyterian Church in Olney. She was a 1925 graduate of the University of Illinois and taught in the rural schools for two years. She was then associated with J.C. Howard Law & Abstract Business. She passed the bar exam in 1942 and was the first lady attorney in Olney and one of few at that time in southern Illinois.

She was in private practice until 1962 when she became County Judge and then Circuit Judge until her retirement in 1980.  She helped promote the drive for Richland Memorial Hospital and pushed for passage of the 708 Tax Ordinance that created the Southeastern Illinois Mental Center and Air Authority.

Miss Winter was state treasurer for the Ill. Business and Professional Women's Club and a charter member of the Olney Business & Professional Women's Club for over 50 years. She was a member of the American, Illinois, Southeastern Illinois and Richland County Bar Association; the American Judicial Society and Illinois Associate Judges Association; and the National and Illinois Councils of Juvenile Court Judges.

Survivors include close friends, Leona Eaton, Martha Pool and Mr. and Mrs. Wilvin Stoltz, all of Olney; and a cousin, Col. Joe E. Golden, Helena Valley, Mont.
