Vernon Elliott - Class Of 1923

Leslie Vernon Elliott, 62, of Rt. 6, Olney, a lifelong resident of Richland County and one of his county's respected citizens, died unexpectedly Sunday night April 21, 1968 at the Richland Memorial Hospital in Olney.

Funeral services at Schaub Funeral Home with Rev. Frank Stout officiating. Burial in Haven Hill Cemetery.

He was born on May 8, 1905 in Olney, son of the late Harvey and Nellie (Hensley) Elliott. He was the great-grandson of William Elliott, who came to Olney about 1825 and owned much of the land east of Elliott Street. He graduated from Olney Township High School in 1923, where he was a member of the football team. He attended and graduated from the University of Illinois in Horticulture and Floriculture. He had served as a substitute Agriculture teacher in the Olney High School.

Mr. Elliott worked in the Olney Post Office, and several other federal agencies in Olney, until about 20 years ago when he retired to manage his farm northwest of Olney. He was an active member of the First Christian Church Disciples of Christ and was a former chairman of the official church board.

He was the last member of his family, as he was preceded in death by his parents, 3 bothers, Kenneth, John and Myron, 1 sister, Evelene VanMatre, a foster sister, Winnie Moore Winans and a daughter who died in 1940. He was married to Lela Mann of Flora, in 1926.

Mr. Elliott is survived by his wife, Lela; a son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Mary Elliott of Lawrenceville, 2 grandsons, Paul and Thad Elliott; 3 sisters-in-law, Mrs. Dorcas Lee Elliott of Olney, Mrs. Alice Elliott of Dallas, TX and Mrs. Mary Elliott of McCook, Nebraska and several nieces.
