Perle F. Shafer - Class Of 1922

Perle Frederick Shafer, 91, of Macomb, Illinois died Monday, July 17, 1995, at Wesley Healthcare Center.

Born Sept. 12, 1903, in Olney to John N. and Ellen Paddick Shafer, he married Vera Barnes on Dec. 27, 1927. She survives.

Also surviving are one son, Dr. Stuart B. Shafer of St. Louis; one daughter, Mrs. William (Patricia) Smith of Macomb; four grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and five stepgreat-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.

He was superintendent of Pearl City Community School District for eight years before moving to Macomb in 1941. He was superintendent of Macomb schools for 28 years, retiring in 1969. In 1980, he was presented the Outstanding Community Service Award. He was past president of the YMCA, Western Division of Illinois Teachers, and the Educational League of Illinois. He was a life member of the Illinois Education Association and the National Education Association. He was president of McDonough County Retired Teachers and the Rocking Chair Club. He also was a member of Phi Delta Kappa and Masonic Lodge 17 in Macomb. He served as president of the Macomb Rotary Club and received the Paul Harris Award in 1981. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church for 50 years and served as an elder.

Services at Dodsworth-Piper-Wallen Funeral Home with Rev. Kenneth Mortonson officiating. Burial in Oakwood Cemetery in Macomb.
