Juanita Mattoon (Ivy)

Juanita (Mattoon) Ivy, 90 of Manteno, Illinois, formerly of Claremont died Thursday May 24, 2001 at University of Chicago Hospital in Chicago.  Funeral services at Manteno Methodist Church with Minister Dennis Beedy officiating. Burial in Crest Haven Memorial Park near Claremont.

Mrs. Ivy was born on January 2, 1911 in Claremont, the daughter of Ora and Carrie (Vail) Mattoon. She married Eugene F. Ivy on July 14, 1934 in Morris. She and her husband moved to Manteno in 1935.

She began her teaching career at Prairieton, a one-room country school, following graduation from High School. By attending summer and night school classes, she completed her bachelor's degree from Olivet College and master's degree from University of Illinois. She taught more than 40 years in Kankakee County, Will County and Manteno village schools. She also served as a building principal in Manteno.

Following her retirement in 1975, she helped organize the Meals on Wheels program in Manteno and served as a volunteer for 20 years. She was an active member of Manteno Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School and served on numerous commissions and committees. She was also a volunteer in the literacy program through Kankakee Community College.

Mrs. Ivy was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International; Kankakee County Principals Assoc.; and Dorcas Chapter #5 of the Eastern Star.

Mrs. Ivy is survived by her husband, Eugene of Manteno; a daughter, Carol Ivy; a brother, Hubert Mattoon; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Russell Mattoon.
