LaVern Gibbs (Williams)

Newburgh resident LaVern Williams died Tuesday, Nov. 4 at Good Samaritan Home. She was 95.

LaVern was born in Olney, Ill., on Aug. 16, 1908, daughter of Walter James and Ida Mae (Rodeffer) Gibbs. She came to Evansville in 1926 to attend Lockyear Business College, where she met her husband, Fletcher. They were longtime Newburgh residents.

LaVern was a member of Newburgh Presbyterian Church and a 50-year member of Order of the Eastern Star 32nd Chapter and Past Mother Advisor for the Rainbow Girls. She was a housewife, mother and grandmother and enjoyed gardening, clabber, bridge and bee hives.

LaVern was preceded in death by her husband, Fletcher, in 1969; two brothers, Walter Alvin Gibbs and Gerald Gibbs; and two daughters-in-law, Betty Oost Williams and Kay Hudson.

LaVern is survived by one son, Monte Williams of Newburgh; two grandsons and their wives, Ned and Helen Williams of Newburgh and Joseph and Allison Williams of Bradenton, Fla.; one granddaughter and her husband, Dr. Julia and James Trudeau of Chesapeake, Va.; and four great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Natalie, Alex and Andrew Williams

Funeral services at Alexander Newburgh Chapel, officiated by Rev. Kathleen Fox. Burial followed at Sunset Memorial Park.
