Eugene Race

Melvin Eugene (Gene) Race, age 50, a former resident of Olney, passed away today, August 26, 1969, at the St. Catherine's Hospital in Hammond, Indiana, following a long period of ill health.

Mr. Race was a native of Jasper county and had lived in Olney for many years before moving to Hammond about 13 years ago. He had been employed in the Inland Steel Company for several years. He was a veteran of World War II and served in the United States Army from June 24, 1944 to January 31, 1946.

Mr. Race was married to Mildred Harmon on August 31, 1940. She survives him.

Also surviving are two children; Mrs. Nancy Vance of Ashland, Ky., and Steve Race at home. There are four grandchildren. He also leaves his parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Race of Olney, and a brother, Harold Race of Bishop, Cal., also a step-brothers, John Hurt of Olney.

Funeral services at the Summers-Rainey Funeral Home, with Rev. Delbert Penrod officiating. Interment in Crest Haven Memorial Cemetery.
