Sarah E. "Betty" Hamilton, 79, of Effingham, formerly of Newton, died at 2 p.m. Sunday, August 3, 1997, at Covenant Medical Center in Urbana.  Services at Buchanan Funeral Home in Newton, with Rev. Clifford Stone officiating. Burial in Westlawn Cemetery in Newton.

Hamilton was born May 7, 1918, in Noble, the daughter of Carl and Marie (Cutshall) Chaplin. She married D.D. Hamilton in 1936. He preceded her in death in 1965.

She was the former owner of Watson Package Store in Watson and owned Hamilton Salvage in Newton.

She is survived by one niece, Deena Brown and her husband, Rick, of Hidalgo; one nephew, Alan Beard and his wife, Sue, of Newton; one uncle, Muriel Cutshall, of Olney; and several great-nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
