Carl Chaplin - Class Of 1934

Carl Edward Chaplin, 67, retired  professor emeritus of horticulture at the University of Kentucky, died Thursday April 26, 1984 at his home after a long illness.

Chaplin began working at UK in 1949 and retired in 1981. He worked part-time for the university for a while after his retirement. He was chairman of the school's Department of Horticulture in 1960 and 1961. While at UK, Chaplin was active in research in strawberry, peach and apple breeding and in environmental studies with those crops. He worked as a peach breeder for the University of Illinois from 1939 to 1949., a native of Olney, Ill., received a bachelor's degree from the University of Illinois in 1938 and a master's degree from that school in 1946.

He had belonged to the Illinois State Horticultural Society, American Society for Horticultural Science, Kentucky Horticultural Society and the American Association of University Professors. He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church.

Surviving are his wife, Pauline H. Chaplin; two sons, Dr. Mark S. Chaplin of Elizabethtown and Dr. Michael H. Chaplin of State College, Pa.; a brother; four sisters; and three grandchildren.
