
William Ancel “Bill” Newton, 64, of Fort Worth, Texas, died Saturday, April 9, 1983 at a Fort Worth hospital after a long illness. The memorial service was held at University Christian Church.
Newton was born October 16, 1918 in Eldorado, Illinois son of Ancel and Ruby (Evans) Newton, and had lived in Ft. Worth since 1961. He was a member of University Christian Church, the Texas Christian University Frog Club, Friends of the TCU Libraries, TCU Century Club and Century II Club.
He lived 18 years in Abilene, where he was active in the Boy Scouts and Abilene Booster Club. He served on the board of stewards at St. Paul Methodist Church and was a past president of the Methodist Men’s Club and Couples Class.
Newton earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 1940 at Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois where he was a varsity football letterman and a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. During World War II, he served in the 5th Division, 13th Marines and participated in the Battle of Iwo Jima.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth “Toni” Newton of Ft. Worth; two sons, Steve Newton of Arlington and Tom Newton of Ft. Smith, Arkansas; a brother, Bob Newton of Springfield, Ohio; three sisters, Katherine Bradshaw of Harcourt, Iowa, Laura Sprague of Davenport, Iowa and Modena Coleman of Springfield, Ohio and four grandchildren.
