John Scherer - Class Of 1932

John Justin Scherer, 81, of United Methodist Village in Lawrenceville, formerly of Olney and also a long time resident of Effingham, died Monday, Feb. 17, 1997, at Lawrence County Memorial Hospital in Lawrenceville.

Funeral services at Zirkle Funeral Home with Rev. Paul Sims officiating. Burial  in Haven Hill Cemetery in Olney.

Scherer was born Sept. 24, 1915, in Olney, the son of Robert and Clara (Burgener) Scherer. He married Gladys Martin, January 8, 1938, in Olney.

He was first appointed as clerk carrier on October 14, 1935, at the U.S. Post Office in Olney. He was later appointed to the position of postal inspector in September 1942, before opening service at Effingham on July 1, 1946. He retired in 1971. He was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church in Effingham and a life member of the Effingham Elks, where he served as lodge secretary for several years.

He is survived by his wife, of Lawrenceville; two sons, John R. Scherer and wife, Mary, of Eden Prairie, Mn., and Steven Scherer and wife, Susan, of Princeton; one daughter, Sharon Duell and husband, William J., of Ocala, Fla.; and four grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Donald Scherer and an infant, Earl Edwin Scherer, two sisters, Bernadine Johnson and Agnes Schmoker.
