Beryl Smith (Mitchell)

Beryl Leone (Smith) Mitchell, born January 21, 1911, passed away at home on August 10, 2009, at the age of 98. Beryl was the daughter of William H. and Elsie D. (Dewhirst) Smith, grew up in Illinois, and traveled to Bakersfield in 1937 with her family.

She contributed to the war effort during WWII by assisting in the construction of warplanes at Lockheed. Beryl maintained a strong work ethic and, for over 45 years, ensured that the biscuits and gravy were properly prepared each morning until her café on Union Ave. closed in 2006. Additionally, Beryl often occupied herself by making jewelry and other adornments.

She was preceded in death by three husbands, one brother, and three sisters. Beryl is survived by her sister, Wanda; brother, Bill; children, Don, Doreen, and Wally; grandchildren, Lora, Sam, Kevin, Dorla, and Donny; as well as many great- grandchildren and one great, great- grandchild.

Graveside services held at Greenlawn Cemetery, Bakersfield. Family asks that donations be made to Optimal Hospice.
