John S. Poland, 79, of Olney died Sunday February 23, 1997 at Richland Memorial Hospital.  Services at Zirkle Funeral Home in Olney with Rev. Burl J. Shinkle officiating. Burial in Haven Hill Memorial Gardens in Olney.

Poland was born March 21, 1917 in Richland County, the son of George W. and Amanda Jane (Smith) Poland. He married Viva Madalen Smith February 14, 1941 in Sedalia, Mo. She preceded him in death September 5, 1994.

He worked as a rural letter carrier for over 30 years for the U.S. Post Office in Olney, was a member of the Rural Letter Carrier Association and was a member of the Free Methodist Church in Olney.

He is survived by one daughter, Mary Alice Stilwell and her husband, Larry of Mitchell, Ind.; two brothers, Robert Poland of Sumner and Frank Poland of Muncie, Ind.; one sister, Lena Cullison of Vincennes Ind.; and three granddaughters.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and three brothers.
