
Arthur B. Schottman, 101, of Effingham, Illinois passed away Monday, July 8, 2013, at Lakeland Rehabilitation & Health Care Center, Effingham. Funeral services at St. John's Lutheran Church, Effingham, with burial in St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery, Dieterich, with military graveside rites.
Arthur was born June 22, 1912, on a farm in rural Montrose, the son of Gerhard W. and Alma (Wolf) Schottman Sr. He worked on the family farm in Montrose and the family chick hatchery in Effingham. Arthur married Helen Hoffman in 1953 in Vandalia and she preceded him in death. He was a sales supervisor for a farm seed company and also worked as an accountant in the Chicago area. Arthur taught in the East Richland (Olney) High School, Vandalia High School and MacArthur High School in Decatur. He retired from Kaskaskia College in Centralia as a business instructor.
Arthur married Elizabeth "Betty" (Schneider) Koeberlein in 1999 in Effingham and she survives. Arthur was a member of the University of Illinois Alumni Association and Kaskaskia College Annuitants Association and had been a member of Delta Pi Epsilon at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston. He was a member of the F.A.C.E. orchestra, Effingham Noon Rotary Club, Effingham Toastmasters, Farm Bureau and the Effingham County Retired Teachers Association. He also was a member of the Effingham American Legion Post 120 and the Effingham VFW Post 1769. Arthur served in the Army Air Force during World War II as a Link Trainer Instructor and was a Statistical Officer in Europe, while serving as Captain with the 334th Bomb Group, 9th Army Air Force. As a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, rural Wheeler, he served as elder and choir member. He also was president of the Dual Congregation of St. Paul's and St. John's Lutheran Church, Dieterich. Arthur served as elder at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Vandalia as well. He served as Sunday School teacher and choir member at Pilgrim Lutheran Church in Decatur. Arthur was Congregational President of Trinity Lutheran Church in Centralia. He was delegate to the Central Illinois District and the National Convention of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. Arthur was also the LLL representative, choir member and Life Light Bible Facilitator of St. John's Lutheran Church in Effingham.
Arthur is survived by his wife, Betty of Effingham; daughter, Ann (Douglas) Knol of Madison, Wis.; three grandchildren; brother, Dr. Gerhard "Garry" (Joanne) Schottman of Overland Park, Kan.; sister, Ruth Dickey of Valparaiso, Ind.; and sister-in-law, Verda Mae Schottman of Effingham.
Arthur was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Helen; brother, Ernest Schottman; and brother-in-law, James Dickey.
