Troit Freeland (History/Pe 1949 & 1950)

Lt. Col. Troit Donovan Freeland, 49, of Charleston, head football coach at Olney Township High School from 1948-50, died of a heart attack on Thursday August 13, 1970 while serving in the armed forces in Vietnam, according to word received by relatives at Charleston.

Born at Casey, he was married to Mary Jane Nicholson on February 8, 1944 at Hobbs, New Mexico.

He was a graduate of Eastern Illinois University of Charleston and served in the Olney High School as a coach and teacher. He served in the armed forces during World War II and re-entered army service where he advanced to the rank of Lt. Colonel.

Besides his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Theresa Usavich of New York, Mrs. Ann Gulley of Florida and Miss Lynn Freeland at home. His mother, Mrs. Rue Freeland, of Charleston; three brothers, Warren of Godfrey, Kenneth of Philo and Harold of Livonia, Michigan and one grandchild also survive.
