Olney Man Dies, Mt. Carmel Man Injured in Two Car Accident

A Mt. Carmel man was injured in a two-car wreck late Thursday, March 14, 1991 on U.S. 50 at the Noble Road near Olney.

Steven Newkirk, 36, was treated and released at Richland Memorial Hospital in Olney, according to a spokesman for Illinois State Police in Effingham.

Police said Newkirk was westbound on U.S. 50 when a pickup truck driven by Micheal Harmon, 23, of Olney pulled from a stop sign into the path of Newkirk’s GMC van.

Harmon, driver of the truck, a 1988 Ford, was taken to Richland Memorial Hospital and later transferred to Welborn Baptist Hospital in Evansville. He was listed in critical condition in the hospital intensive care unit, a spokesman said today. The State Police spokesman said a traffic ticket is pending against Harmon.

Harmon was later transferred back to Richland Memorial Hospital, where he died, Tuesday, April 9, 1991 of injuries resulting from the accident.

Micheal Eugene Harmon, 23, of Olney, IL, died April 9, 1991 at Richland Memorial Hospital.

He was born December 15, 1967 in Olney, the son of Larry and Sharon (Hempsten) Harmon. He married Kimberly Fulk May 5, 1990 in Noble.

He was a correctional officer for Richland County Sheriff's Department.

Survivors include his wife; his parents; one brother, Ken Harmon; one sister, Susan Harmon; grandparents, Mr. & Mrs. Kenneth Hampsten; and grandmother, Lorene Harmon Biehl.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Carl Harmon and a sister, Christine Ann Harmon.

Funeral services were held at Summers-Kistler Funeral Home with burial in North Freedom Cemetery, rural Noble.
