Truck Crash Claims Life of Passenger

A Newton man was killed Monday when the pickup truck he was riding in left the roadway and overturned. The driver was arrested for drunken driving.

The one-vehicle accident occurred at 6:30 p.m. Monday, two miles north of Newton and east of Illinois 130, according to state police in Effingham.

The truck, headed westbound on the highway, went out of control, slid and flipped over, coming to rest in a soybean field.

The passenger, Daniel L. Derler, 27, formerly of Olney was killed. The driver, Michael Steinko, 26 of Cisne, was treated and released from Richland County Memorial Hospital. He was charged with driving under the influence, illegal transportation of alcohol and not wearing a seat belt.

Daniel L. (Danny) Derler, 27, Rt. 4, Newton, formerly of Olney died as the result of an accident at 6:37 p.m., September 3, 1990 in Jasper County, 2 miles north of Newton and east of 130.

Services in Summers-Kistler-Funeral Home with Rev. Glen Fehrenbacher officiating. Burial in Chauncey Cemetery.

Mr. Derler was born in Olney, December 27, 1962, the son of Franklin D. and Connie Sue (Burbank) Derler (deceased).  He was a union boilermaker.

Survivors include two brothers, Tom Rauch and Michael Rauch, both of Olney; three sisters, Diane Taylor of Olney, Mrs. Jeff (Marcia) Enlow of Olney, and Mrs. Gary (Joann) Ernest of Claremont; the parents who raised him, Jim and Mary Rauch of Olney and grandparents, Paul and Harriett Burbank of Sumner.
