Two Drowned Sailors Named
Oxnard, Calif. (AP) – Two sailors who drowned in rough surf were identified Friday by authorities at the Point Mugu Missile Test Station.
Officials said the victims were Hubert V. Scherer, 22 of Olney, Illinois and Theodore A. Scheutz, 22 of El Cajon, Calif.
Witnesses said the two were wading in rough surf Thursday on a remote beach and were apparently swept into the sea by a large wave.

Hubert Vernon Scherer, 22, son of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Scherer of Rt. 2, Olney, was accidentally drowned Thursday July 27, 1967 while on duty in the U. S. Navy at Point Mugu, California, according to a telegram received today from Capt. William Tearns, Director of the Pacific Missile Base at Point Mugu.
No other details were given, but a letter giving more information will be sent.
The family home is about two miles north of the Shell Truck Stop, east of Olney.
The young sailor was born in Olney on April 29, 1945, son of Herman and June Crum Scherer. He graduated from the East Richland High School in Olney in 1963 and worked at the AMF plant for a time before entering service.
He entered the Naval service on October 26, 1965 and had last visited at home in October, 1966. When he entered service, he was stationed for a time at Great Lakes and has been in California since that time.
Mr. Scherer is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Scherer, one brother, Harvey and two sisters, Vivian and Marsha Scherer, all at home.
His maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Crum of Olney and his paternal grandmother, Mrs. Stella Kaltrider of Olney, also survive.
The remains will be returned to the Schaub Funeral Home in Olney.
