Fatal Calhoun County fire being investigated as murder-suicide

Charleston, West Virginia – The West Virginia State Police are investigating a fatal weekend fire in Calhoun County as a murder-suicide according to Captain R.A. Maddy, Deputy Chief of Staff.

On Saturday, October 14, 2023 at approximately 12:50 p.m., Calhoun County 911 received a call reporting a fire at a residence on Beach Road in Orma, (Calhoun County), W.Va. The caller was believed to be the suspect, identified as 74 year old Harvey Haerr. State police units responded to the residence and found Harvey Haerr deceased from an apparent gunshot wound outside of the burning residence.

On Sunday, October 15, 2023 human remains were located in the debris of the residence by members of the State Fire Marshall’s office and the West Virginia State Police. The remains are believed to be those of the suspect’s wife, 62-year old Elizabeth Haerr.

The remains were transported to the Medical Examiner’s Office for autopsy and identification. This case is being investigated as a murder-suicide by members of the State Police and the State Fire Marshall’s Office. This investigation remains active and ongoing.

Harvey D. Haerr was born December 1948 the son of Harvey D. Haerr, Sr. and Marjorie (Craig) Haerr.

Harvey is preceded in death by his parents, Harvey and Marjorie Haerr. He is survived by siblings, Roger Haerr and Susan Ahfield.
