Martin Allen Reed

Dr. Martin Allen (Marty) Reed, age 77, passed away Wednesday, November 6, 2024 at Linda White Hospice House in Evansville IN. He had Parkinson’s for the last four years. Martin (Marty) was born November 15, 1946 in Olney, IL the son of Connell Martin and Mildred Marie (Miller) Reed.

During his youth Marty enjoyed getting together with friends, ice skating, Boy Scouts, and playing the alto saxophone in band. His lifelong passion for travel was inspired by “Gramps” Gleo Harms and Grandma Audrey as they took him on road trips across the US. Many happy days were spent fishing and with nature walks through the woods. Grandma Harms also contributed to making sure he made good grades with abundant help with homework!

He was a devoted worker all of his life starting stocking shelves at Schneider’s Grocery in Olney at age 16. He graduated from East Richland High School. . He then attended Radiology Training in Danville IL which evolved into a lifelong passion for his career. He continued developing his skills as new technology emerged and taught the profession to a multitude of students.

Marty loved the Catholic faith and served the Lord by sharing his singing talents in the church choir. He was a true gentleman. His genuine smile for those he met, his kindness, generosity, and considerate spirit will be remembered by many. His great sense of humor often put people at ease. He loved joking around and making others laugh.

His favorite pastimes were traveling, blackjack, and fishing, with his true passion teaching. He loved and cared for his dogs throughout his life. He was a devoted family man and will be greatly missed by his wife, Cheryl Reed, of Evansville IN.

Marty is survived by his wife, Cheryl of Evansville, IN; sons, Scott and wife Nancy of Palatine, IL and Craig and wife Melissa of Huntley, IL; stepsons, Jason Richardson and wife Elizabeth of Bloomington, IN, Eric Richardson of Princeton, IN and Michael Richardson of Evansville, IN; grandchildren, Andrew, Caleb, and Abby Reed, Lucas, Zachary, and Ashley Reed and Olivia, Cooper and Sophie Richardson; sister, Marsha Rubsam and husband Tony of Effingham, IL; sister-in-law, Kimberly Holman and husband Steve of The Villages, FL; nieces and nephews.

Marty was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents; several aunts and uncles.

Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Monday, November 11, 2024 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 1301 S. Green River Rd., Evansville. A Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11:00 a.m. at the church with Father Bernie Etienne officiating.

Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery at a later date.

He shaped the careers of countless students with his passion for both the science and the art of imaging. Known for his commitment to teaching, Dr. Reed blended rigorous academic instruction with hands-on, real-world experience, ensuring his students were not only well-prepared but also confident in their abilities. His expertise in radiology, coupled with his dedication to fostering a supportive and engaging learning environment, left an indelible mark on the program and on the field. His legacy continues to resonate through the successful careers of his former students, who carry forward the knowledge, skill, and professionalism he instilled in them.
