John David Von Almen - Class Of 1953

John David Von Almen

John David Von Almen, 80, of Half Moon Bay, California, passed away Monday, May 16, 2016, on a beautiful afternoon while doing one of the things he loved most, going for a walk. John was born December 7, 1935 in Olney, Illinois, son of John R. and Julia M. (Campbell) Von Almen.

John was known throughout Half Moon Bay for his eccentric clothing, biking around town, and his great personality. He served in the U.S. Navy. He was a retired City of San Mateo fireman. During retirement, he did more than most people dream of.

He biked throughout Italy, sailed the Greek Islands, went skydiving and was a member of the Coastside Riders motorcycle club. He truly enjoyed each and every day that was given to him.

He was a huge supporter of his grandsons and looked forward to Friday night Half Moon Bay Cougar football games. John always knew how to have a good time — Christmas Tree Burning Party, "Bonners" on the beach, and every Sunday at San Gregorio Store listening to the live music.

John is survived by his children, John Jr. and Brian, by daughter-in-law Tammy, by grandchildren Amanda (Leaf), Travis, Kyle, and Hayden, by siblings Judy (Miller) and Robert, by uncle Charles (Camel) and by all his very close friends. The family is grateful for all the community support at this difficult time.

John's wishes were to be cremated and there will be a private ceremony to honor his wishes. There will be a Celebration of Life at a time to be determined.
