Ronald Joe Miller - Class Of 1953

Ronald Joe Miller

Ronald “Joe’ Miller, 89, of St. Simons Island, GA died September 23, 2023, at Hospice of the Golden Isles. Joe was born in Olney, IL, the fourth son of Arthur and Ruth Miller on March 18, 1934.

After graduation, he joined the United States Marine Corps where he served a two-year active enlistment and six years of active reserves. After his discharge from the Marine Corps, he joined the Illinois State Police where he served for 28 years. He served in every rank from Trooper to Major and was then appointed to the head role of Superintendent by the Governor where he served until his retirement in 1984. He accepted a position at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) where he served as Assistant Director and Deputy Director until 1999 when he retired. Shortly after, he was rehired by FLETC to teach leadership, a position he held until 2014.

Joe’s priority in life was his love of his family and he was their source of strength and support and quiet leadership.

Joe loved everything about the game of golf and the many hours of camaraderie spent with his golfing buddies on the course at Hampton.

Joe is survived by his wife Janice, and four children; Mitzi Brandenburg, Brian Miller (Deanna), Kristin Bland (Tony) and Carrie Batchelor (Kevin); 8 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

To have known Joe Miller as a friend and co-worker was a privilege and an honor with his innate kindness in all phases of life. To have been loved by Joe was a treasure beyond reckoning and now a loss that is beyond measure.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Hospice of the Golden Isles for their compassionate care during Joe’s illness. If desired, a donation to their amazing organization may be made.
