Jerry Don Bateman

First Lt. Jerry Don Bateman,  25, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Bateman of Rt. 4, Olney was killed in the explosion and crash of a C-125 Military Transport plane Saturday night, May 9, 1964 in southeastern Oklahoma.

First Lt. Bateman, a 1957 graduate of East Richland High School in Olney and one of the community's most popular young men, was a co-pilot of the plane.  Jerry had been in the Air Force just over two years.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Koila, a native of Big Springs, Texas and a six-month old daughter, Wende Lynn. Also surviving is a brother, Wayne Bateman of Olney.

The family is awaiting further word from the Air Force before making further arrangements; however the body will be returned to Olney for services and burial.

According to Associated Press news reports from the crash scene near Cooperton, Oklahoma, the C125 was enroute to Dover, Delaware from Clovis Air Force Base in New Mexico. The tragedy occurred during a severe thunderstorm. Witnesses said the four-engine troop carrier exploded in the air and fell to the earth in flames.

Shelley Bateman (Steber) (1973)

Jerry was in the US Air Force, married and had a daughter. He died when his plane went down in May 1963. He was a wonderful uncle.
