Shirley J. Johnston (Everroad)

Shirley Jean (Johnston) Everroad, 84, of Columbus, Indiana passed away on Friday, July 28, 2023, at Our Hospice of South Central Indiana in Columbus. Born February 22, 1939, in Richland County, Illinois, she was the daughter of William Robert and Leona Martha (Gorrell) Johnston. She married James Linn Everroad on November 19, 1988, in Elizabethtown; he preceded her in death on October 11, 2010.

Shirley received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Indianapolis and her master’s degree from Ball State University.  She worked as a teacher for Bartholomew Consolidated School Corporation until her retirement.  Shirley was a member of Sandy Hook United Methodist Church in Columbus. She enjoyed reading and working crossword puzzles and Sudoku. She loved playing the piano, singing in the choir, and listening to music.

Survivors include her daughters, Kimberly Sue (Lloyd) Miller of Columbus, Tamra (Philip) Lambert of Flower Mound, Texas, and Melissa (Nathan) Smurdon of Indianapolis; grandchildren, Amie (Chris) Jordan, Arika (Boone) Asher, Lilly Asher, Alyssa (Paul) Meek, Tyler Miller, Elaine Lambert, Lance (Savanna) Lambert, Nathaniel Spaugh, Nicholas Spaugh, Noah Jordan, Nora Spaugh, Luke Lambert, and Kendall Smurdon; great-grandchildren, Cyrus Lambert, Westyn Asher, Knox Asher, Aspyn Meek, Scarlett Meek, and Russell Meek; great-great-grandchild, Theodore Spaugh; step-children, Jeffrey (Carole) Everroad of Seymour, Becky (Larry) Blevins of Florida, and Cheryl (Jerry) Wilson of North Vernon; step grandchildren, Andy (Saranda) Blevins, Amy (Ryan) Loudermilch, Jeffrey (Bethany) Everroad, Wendy Wilson, Jeremy (Cassie) Owens, and Jacob (Sarah) Owens; step-great-grandchildren, Caleb Schryer, Peyton Napier, Dillion Napier, Michael Owens, and Charlotte Owens; brother, James R. (Mary) Johnston of West Virginia; sister, Carol Sue (John) Gifford of Cincinnati, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; baby sister, Elizabeth Johnston; brother, Fred Johnston; grandson Noah Smurdon; and step-granddaughter, Kristina Bauman.

The funeral service was conducted at the Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North Vernon.  A burial followed in the Vernon Cemetery in Vernon.
