
Longtime Littleton, Colorado resident, Jean (Embry) Wilmington died Wednesday, August 28, 2024. She was 81 years old.
She was born in Butler County outside of Bowling Green, Kentucky on December 1, 1942. Jean was the youngest of eight children: Maxine Bryant, Lionel Embry, Kathleen Warren, Bill Embry, Burt Embry, James Embry, and Jewel Gardner, all of which have preceded her in death as well as her parents, Purtle Embry and Lena Jones Embry.
Jean moved from Kentucky when she was 8 years of age and spent the next nine years outside of Olney, Illinois. After graduating from High School, she moved to Evanston, Illinois where she managed the Bureau of Vital Statistics for the North Shore of Chicago Health Department.
She met her husband, Fred Wilmington, while living in Evanston and they were married January 22, 1966 in Wilmette, Illinois.
Jean and Fred came to Colorado on vacation in 1968 and fell in love with the state. After returning home they started making plans to relocate here. They moved to Littleton in 1969 and one week after arriving, she started working for the Bemis Public Library. Within her first year of employment she became the supervisor of the circulation department and continued in that position for 34 ½ years. Jean set up the popular program Library Without Walls and was recognized by the City of Littleton as being the employee who went beyond the call of duty. Jean retired from the City of Littleton in October, 2003.
Jean and Fred are longtime members of the Bear Valley Church of Christ.
Jean is survived by her husband, Fred Wilmington and many nieces and nephews.
She will be laid to rest at Olinger Chapel Hill Mortuary, Chapel Hill.
