She was my Kindergarten teacher and the most kind, gentle teacher in my years as a student. I still have pictures from 1960-61 and remember those days of my first school experience at Central School. I can only imagine the stories she had to tell about the antics of a bunch of 5 year olds.

Mrs Shaw has always been one of my all time favorite teachers.  We were all so lucky to have her for our start in school.  She was kind, thoughtful and caring.  They just don't come any better!!!

Unfortunately with time, some of our memories of our early school years fade, but not so for Kindergarten.  I loved Mrs. Shaw.  I remember so many of the activities from the Kindergarten classroom at Central vividly.  She was special and we were in awe of her.  Such a genuine individual.  Rest in peace, Mrs. Shaw!heart

Thak you for your thoughtful comments about my mother.  I too had her for a kindergarten teacher.  Although I was allowed to call her "Mother", I didn't get any special favors.  She used to have a musical every year she called "Opperettas".  One was called the "Wedding of the Flowers".  Of course every girl wanted to be the bride,  I was passed over by a little girl with beautiful black curly hair!  I also wanted to sing a solo, but had trouble carrying a tune.  I can remember mother working with me at night to help me sing, but alas, no solo for me.  Ha!  She continued having the operettas at Central on the stage in the gym until she was sent to Cherry.

At first parents who had long loved and cherished Miss Amy Fletcher at Silver, the only kindergarten teaher in Olney for many years, were not sure they wanted their children to be in the New Teacher's kindergarten.  But Mother's kind, but firm and loving teaching style won them over.  When mother was hired in 1951, Miss Fletcher was having around 50 students in each class.  An overwhelming number for any teacher, let alone for 5 year olds!

By adding another kindergarten class at Central this enabled many more children to have an opportunity to attend.  At that time, kindergarten was not required for students. It was not long until my mother's classes also approached 50 and a third kindergarten was added. Teahing must be an inherited love as I also chose to be a teacher for 27 years.  Jean Shaw Shafer
