George U. Herman, age 79 of Olney, passed away at 4:24 PM on Tuesday, February 18, 2020 at his residence.

Visitation will be from 5-7 PM on Sunday, February 23, 2020 at the Christian Church of Olney. Funeral service will be at 10 AM on Monday, February 24, 2020 at the Christian Church of Olney. Burial will be in Liberty Lawn Cemetery in Olney. Pastor Ben Strode will be officiating.

George was born on May 15, 1940 in Richland County, the son of Otto George and Elizabeth (Muhs) Herman. He later married Shelia Hufford on November 14, 2011 in Laurens, SC. She survives.

He was a private first class for the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He was a lifetime farmer. He was an elected board member of the Farm Bureau and a member of American Legion in Olney. His favorite thing to do when he wasn’t farming was going dancing with his wife. He will be sadly missed by his family, friends, and all who knew him.

George is survived by his wife Shelia Herman of Olney; 4 step-children Terry Reece, Susan McGowan, Steven Reece and Julie Marie Mathewson; adopted son Rodney Travis; 2 brothers Paul Herman in Michigan and Frank Herman (Janet) of Xenia; 4 sisters Mary Edna Brian (Donald) of Olney, Ruth Rzeppa of Michigan, Dolores Francis of Bloomington, IN, Freda Miller (Richard) of Rochester and several nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents Elizabeth and Otto Herman, brother Bernard Herman and 2 sisters Theresa Chaplin and Lucille Bigard.

Memorials can be sent to St. Joseph School in memory of George Herman.
