Garnet VanHorn (English 1957-1960)

Garnet (Perry) Van Horn, 92, originally from Robinson, Illinois, died at Primrose Retirement Community in Newburgh, Indiana on September 3, 2021. Born February 26, 1929, in Mingo County, West Virginia, Garnet was the daughter of Uley Perry and Hallie Cline Perry. While at Berea College she met, and in 1948 married Clifford Layne Van Horn of Louisa, Kentucky, who preceded her in death on May 30, 2000.

Also preceding her in death were brothers Mervil Perry and Thurman Perry, a sister Betty Perry, and a sister-in-law Dorothy Sue Wharton.

Garnet graduated from Berea with majors in English and Social Studies and also earned a Master of Science degree in Education from Eastern Illinois University. Garnet enjoyed teaching very much and was qualified to teach grades six through twelve. She taught high school in Olney and Hutsonville and finished her career at Nuttall Middle School where she taught English for seventeen years.

Garnet had many dear friends with whom she shared many activities. She loved to read and for ten years was leader of the book club sponsored by the Robinson Public Library. She was also active in various bridge clubs throughout the years. Garnet was an avid University of Kentucky basketball fan and looked forward to the start of each new season. Friends and family knew better than to call her during a game.

She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law Rosanna and Ken Fitts and Michele and Stan Baird, both of Evansville, Indiana, and by her grandchildren Sara Fitts, Eric Fitts, and Zachary Baird. She is also survived by brothers Dr. Simon Perry (Francis), Huey Perry (Jill), Winston Perry (Joyce) and by sisters Drema Ferrell (Carl) and Kathleen Punturi and by her sister-in-law Dreama Perry as well as many nieces and nephews.

A wonderful family, good friends, a most satisfying career, and living in Robinson were some of the things she considered blessings. She had all of these.

I actually tried several times to find Mrs. Van Horn on the internet. I wanted to let her know how much I appreciated her comments and support re: my writing when I was in her class. I thought she might be interested to know that I went on to have a career as a journalist and now write fiction. Her encouragement made a big difference in my life.
