W. E. Scherer (Asst. Supt. 1949-1957)

William Edward Scherer, 78, of West Mac Ave., lifelong resident of Richland County, passed away early Monday morning, December 14, 1970, shortly after being admitted to  Richland Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Scherer was born in Preston Township on January 1, 1892, a son of Jacob and Elizabeth (Boatman) Scherer. He was united in marriage with Grayce Holtz January 21, 1920 in Olney.

He was a veteran of World War I, a member of Olney Lodge 140 A.F. & A.M., Modern Woodman of America and attended Mt. Gilead Church. He was a graduate of S.I.U. where he earned his Bachelors Degree in Education.

On his return to Richland County, he served 40 years in the teaching profession having taught at Dundas High, Calhoun High, Silver Street Grade School and retired in 1957 as Assistant Supt. of East Richland School District.

Besides his wife, Grayce, he is survived by one son, Jerry Edward Scherer of Mundelein, Ill; his daughter-in-law, Dona; two grandsons, Steven Edward and Mark Daniel; one brother, Simon Scherer of Olney and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Scherer was preceded in death by two sisters, Mrs. Henry (Minnie) Holtz, Mrs. Perry (Dessie) Thomas; an infant sister, Mary; four brothers, David, Clyde, Claude and an infant brother, John.

Funeral services in the Zirkle Mortuary with interment in Haven Hill Cemetery.
