Virgil A. Newlin (Social Studies 1947-1950)

Virgil A. Newlin, 67, of Pekin, Illinois died Tuesday, February 19, 1985 in Methodist Medical Center.  Graveside services at Shiloh Cemetery, Big Creek, Miss.

Born June 29, 1917 in Dupo to Jesse and Amalia Doerr Newlin, he married Madie Virginia Wyatt March 23, 1946 in Grenada, Miss. She died in 1969. He then married Imogene Franklin in Farmer City.

Surviving are his wife; one son, Donald F. Newlin; one brother, Wayne Newlin; one sister, Myrtle Greenland.

He was preceded in death by one brother.

A World War II Army Veteran, he was a teacher for 40 years, retiring from Pekin Community High School in 1982. He taught Social Studies at East Richland High School in Olney prior to moving to Pekin. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, Phi Delta Kappa, National Education Association, National Council for Social Studies and Carpenter’s Union Local 644.
