Monte Scranton - Class Of 1970

Monte Scranton

Monte Scranton, 66, of Owensboro, formerly of Olney, passed away on Friday, April 20, 2018 at Select Specialty Hospital in Evansville, IN.  He was born on December 23, 1951 in Olney, IL, the son of Basil C. Scranton, Jr. and Mary (Bailey) Sheridan.

Monte attended ERHS and played football, like his brother, and made many friends and graduated in 1970. He had a natural artistic ability and shared his artwork with family and friends. Monte had an uncanny ability to tell vivid stories from his "life experiences" to whomever would listen and would always leave them laughing hysterically. He would give anyone who needed it the shirt off of his back. Monte was a lifelong car freak and mechanic from the first time he tore apart a brand new lawnmower and put it back together again at the age of 12. He moved to KY in the late 70's where he started his family, raising three kids and a few of their friends. He was baptized and joined the LDS Church in 1997.

Monte loved to work on cars and talk about what he was doing and taught a lot of kids including his sister and daughter about engines, cars, and how to use tools. He and a friend owned S & W Repair and Speed Shop in Owensboro. Monte built, raced, and showed many dragsters, motorcycles, and show cars.Monte is survived by his son, Monty Scranton; daughter, Rebecca Cockerell; son, Daniel Riley Scranton; mother, Mary Sheridan; grandchildren, Kaycie, Gracie, Colton, Holly, Nicholas, Marianna, Gabriel, Tala, Ceely, Cameron, Cheyenne, and Chrisean; sister, Lisa (Ben) Weiler; sister, Mary (Chad) Walker-Wissel; and several nieces and cousins; and was still friends with ex-wives Denise, Peggy, and Berdena.

He was preceded in death by his brother Gary Stephen Scranton, father, and maternal grandparents, Bertha and Riley Corbet Bailey, paternal grandparents, Jessie and Basil Scranton, Sr.

Memorials can be made to Owensboro Community College Automotive Department.

A funeral service will be held at 12:00 PM on Wednesday, April 25, 2018 at the Kistler-Patterson Funeral Home in Olney with a visitation beginning at 10:00 AM.  Burial will follow in Haven Hill Memorial Gardens.

Monte's family would LOVE it if his final ride could be accompanied with the sights and sounds of "hot rods", classic cars, Harley's or anything loud to let him know he left an impact on this world by passing his love of anything on wheels onto his family and friends.
