William Andrew Moore - Class Of 1921

Dr. William A. Moore, 70, physician, of 318 S. Elliott St., died unexpectedly at his office on Whittle Avenue, Thursday morning March 21, 1974.  Funeral services at Zirkle Funeral Home with Dr. W.A. Robinson officiating. Interment in Maple Hill Cemetery in Fairfield, Ill., where military rites will be rendered by the Olney Veteran's organizations.

Dr. Moore was born June 15, 1903 in Fairfield, Ill., the son of Dr. William Edgar and Sarah Blakely Moore. He obtained his formal education at Wake Forest College, N.C., granted his degree in Medicine from St. Louis University in 1933; and did post graduate work at the University of Vienna in Austria. He interned at the Lutheran Hospital in St. Louis. He was commissioned a Capt. in the Army Medical Corps and advanced to the rank of Lt. Col. at the time of his retirement in 1947.

In 1950 he entered private practice here in Olney, where he was a member of the Richland Co. Medical Society and staff member of the Richland Memorial Hospital. He was quite active in local and state politics, being elected to the General Assembly in the 1959-60 session and re-elected a second term in the "at large" election in 1964.

Memberships include the First United Methodist Church; Richland Post No. 30, American Legion; Olney Memorial Post #4226; Veterans of Foreign Wars; Loyal Order of Moose, Olney Lodge #1372; Olney Lodge #140 A.F. & A.M.; Henry Godeke, Chapter #38 Royal Arch Mason; Gorin Commandery #14 Knights Templar; Ainad Temple of East St. Louis; the Center Shrine Club of Olney and the Olney Lodge #926 B.P.O.Elks.

Surviving Dr. Moore are one son, John Hartwell Moore of New York; two daughters, Mrs. Ellen H. Patterson of Olney and Mrs. Corinne A. Parnely of Joliet, Ill.; two sisters, Mrs. Nell Landis of Olney and Mrs. Sarah Cassady of Lakeland, Fla.; two grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
