Alvin Hurt

John Alvin Hurt, 91, of Olney, died Saturday, November 20, 2010, at St. Luke's Hospital in Kansas City, Mo.  Funeral services at Summers-Kistler Funeral Home with Reverend Bill Wiggs officiating.  Burial in Crest Haven Memorial Park Cemetery in rural Claremont with full military rites performed by Olney veterans organizations.

Mr. Hurt was born November 10, 1919, in Jasper County, the son of John Jefferson and Flaudia (Saulsberry) Hurt. He married Dorothy June Ivy on August 27, 1940, in Madisonville, Ky.She preceded him in death on February 19, 2008.

During World War II, he served in the Air Force and was always proud of his country and his service. John worked as a mechanic at Hahn's Motor Sales in Olney. Later, John and Dorothy moved to Princeton, Ind., where John worked in the oil-field supply business. When AMF opened in Olney, John was hired as a set-up man in the welding department and they moved back to the Olney area, where he eventually retired from AMF.

John enjoyed his family, wood-working, fishing and camping. Although a quiet man, he had a quick wit and an enjoyable sense of humor. He was deeply devoted to his wife, Dorothy, taking care of her in her last years. She preceded him in death on February 19, 2008, and he greatly missed her each day of their earthly separation.

He was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church.

John and Dorothy had two children, David A. (Carolyn) Hurt, of Riverside, Mo., and Cheryl L. (Bob) Ginder, of Olney; nine grandchildren, Jan (Jerry) Adams, of Kansas City, Mo., Stacy Pennington, of Liberty, Mo., Cindy (Tom) Barton, of Kansas City, Mo., David J. Hurt, of Riverside, Mo., Shawn (Amanda) Ginder, of Vincennes, Ind., James (Melissa) Ginder, of Olney, Kyle (Cari) Ginder, of Carmi, and Kelsey Ginder, of Olney; and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John Jefferson and Flaudia Hurt, wife, Dorothy June Hurt, and grandson, Brett Ginder.
