Ward Schaub

Colonel Ward K. Schaub, U.S. Marine Corps (Ret'd) age 52, of Fayetteville, New York died Tuesday February 17, 1970 in the Syracuse Community General Hospital, Syracuse, N.Y. following an illness of several months.

He was born December 11, 1917 in Kempton, Illinois son of Orville E. and Florence Kneale Schaub. Olney had been his home since early 1922. He attended the Olney school system, graduating from Olney Township High School. Following his graduation from Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Ind. in 1939, he entered the U.S. Marine Corps.

Colonel Schaub was serving overseas in the Pacific when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor, and he participated in several major combat invasions on Japanese held islands, spending most of World War II in the Pacific Theatre of war. He commanded an engineering batallion on Iwo Jima, where he served with the 5th Amphibious Corps. Col. Schaub was awarded the Bronze Star medal with V during World War II.

Upon his retirement several years ago, he assumed a position as a staff member of Syracuse University.

He is survived by his wife, Katharine Gassmann Schaub, five daughters, Mrs. Charles (Sara) Trayser of Urbana, Mrs. Robert (Ellen) Meyer, Jr. of Saranac Lake, N.Y., Elizabeth, Katharine and Margaret all living at home. He is also survived by his mother, Mrs. Florence Schaub of Olney, three brothers, Bob and Jack Schaub of Olney and Bill Schaub of Springfield, Ill. Also his father and mother-in-law, Zean and Gertrude Gassmann of Olney.

He was preceded in death by a son, Eric Harwood, a brother, Richard and his father, Orville E. Schaub, who died March 2, 1965.

Burial in Arlington National Cemetery where full military rites will be conducted.
