Riley L. Bowen

GALESBURG - Riley L. Bowen, 90, formerly of 1079 N. Cherry St., died Friday, Aug. 19, 2005, at Knox County Nursing Home in Knoxville.

Born March 17, 1915, in Richland County to Harry D. and Freda Griffin Bowen, he married Rachel Boley on Aug. 12, 1936, in Charleston. She survives.

Also surviving are one son, Don (and Karla) of Oklahoma City, Okla.; one daughter, Nancy (and William) Balbinotti of Galesburg; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother. He served in the Army for two years during World War II, stationed in Europe. He was a biology teacher at Galesburg High School for 30 years, retiring in 1976. He was the ticket manager at Galesburg High School for 14 years. He and his brother ran Bowen Ice Cream in West Frankfort and he also farmed with his daughter. He attended Eastern Illinois University for two years and received his master's degree from the University of Illinois in 1941. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Galesburg and the Methodist Men.

Services at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. The Rev. Marilyn Anell will officiate. Burial in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens, where military honors will be accorded by Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post 285.
