Eugene Harold Scherer

Eugene H. Scherer, 82, of Olney, died Thursday, January 20, 2011, at his home.  Burial in Crest Haven Memorial Park Cemetery in rural Claremont with full military rites by Olney veterans.

Mr. Scherer was born December 29, 1928, in Richland County, the son of Roscoe and Edna (Fritschle) Scherer. He married Norma Jean Leist on December 9, 1950. She survives.

He was a retired farmer. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Olney. He served in the U.S. Army 101st 5th Cavalry Regiment during the Korean War and was awarded two Bronze Stars. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was a member of Future Farmers of America. He was awarded the Soil and Water Conservation Farmer of the Year and was a member of the American Legion. He enjoyed collecting antique tractors, the challenge of making them run again and competing in antique tractor pulls. He also enjoyed restoring his Model T. He also restored player pianos for each of his children.

Mr. Scherer is survived by his wife of 60 years, Norma Jean Scherer, of Olney; son, Gary Scherer and wife, Mary Beth, of Olney; daughter Kathy Cook and husband, Dennis, of Flora; and daughter, Brenda Dehlinger and husband, Dave, of Olney. He was blessed with eight grandchildren; two step-grandsons; five great-grandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren; brother, Junior Scherer, of Olney; sister, Bernadine Dasch and husband, Austin, of Noble; sister, Velma VonAlmen and husband, Paul, of Hamilton, Ohio; brother, Howard Scherer and wife, Lucille, of Olney; sister, Arlene Parr and husband, Dan, of Peoria; brother Lee Scherer and wife, Diane, of Olney; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Roscoe and Edna; brother-in-law, Fred Guyot; and sister-in-law, Hazel (Boatman) Scherer.
