Dale Sterchi

Dale Arnold Sterchi, 84, of Olney, died Wednesday, December 22, 2010, at Burgin Manor in Olney.  Burial in Crest Haven Memorial Park Cemetery with full military rites performed by Olney veterans organizations.

Mr. Sterchi was born March 9, 1926, in Dundas, the son of Robert and Jessie (Scherer) Sterchi. He married Betty (Cralle) Umfleet in 1948. She survives.

He was a 1943 graduate of Olney Township High School. He enlisted in the Navy at age 17 and served in the Pacific for three years during World War II. He worked at Standard Oil Refinery in Gary, Ind., for five years. He later owned and operated a farm near Dundas. He was a member of Olney American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He served on the Conservation Board, Farm Bureau and Farm Credit Service of Southeastern Illinois. He also served on Saron Church board for may years and helped organize and was the first president of Ruritan Club in Dundas. He was a member of Saron Church of Grand Prairie.

Mr. Sterchi is survived by his wife, Betty Sterchi, of Olney; five children, Sharon Brooks, of Olney, Dennis (Diane) Sterchi, of New Palestine, Ind., Alan (Susan) Sterchi, of Olney, Roger Sterchi, of Olney, and Kendra (Dennis) Sager, of Charleston; nine grandchildren, Tracy Fulk, Tony Brooks, Trina Sterchi, Jessica Hunt, Brittney Sager, Wesley Sterchi, Tyler Sterchi, Jamie Jennings and Eric Sterchi; one great-grandchild; and three brothers, Carl, Elmer and Robert Sterchi.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Jessie Sterchi, and two sisters, Lula Williamson and Elizabeth Sterchi.

Memorials may be made to American Diabetes Association or Olney Dialysis Center.
