Olney GI Killed in Vietnam

An Olney serviceman, who celebrated his 21st  birthday about two weeks after arriving in Vietnam less than two months ago, was killed in action Saturday, February 17, 1968 near Saigon.

Spec. 4 Dennis F. Hahn, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ephraim Hahn of Route 2, Olney, was killed in heavy fighting near the capital city.

A 1965 graduate of East Richland High School, Hahn left the United States January 2 and marked his 21st birthday January 24th.

The body will be taken to Summers-Rainey Funeral Home in Olney.

Specialist 4 Dennis F. Hahn, 21, son of Ephraim and Frances (Hann) Hahn of Olney Rt. 2, was killed in action in Vietnam on Saturday, Feb. 17, 1968 according to word received by his parents.

Army personnel visited the Hahn home four miles north of Claremont in the Stringtown area, to advise the parents of his death in action.

Dennis was born in Olney Jan. 24, 1947. He graduated from East Richland High School in the Class of 1965 and was for a time employed by Automatic Electric Co. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in April 1966 and spent 16 months in Germany. He was home on leave during the Christmas holidays two months ago and left Dec. 30. Early in January he arrived in Vietnam and was assigned to the 25th Infantry Division there.

The body will be returned to the Summers-Rainey Funeral Home in Olney.

Dennis was the oldest of seven children.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by the following brothers and sisters: Kathleen, employed by General Telephone Co. in Bloomington, Ronald Lee, a student at U. of I., Martin, a senior at ERHS, Wendell, a sophomore at ERHS, and Marcia and Cecilia all at home. Paternal grandmother is Mrs. Helena Hahn of Olney; and maternal grandfather is Frank Hann of Robinson.

Dennis was a member of the St. Joseph's Catholic Church at Stringtown.
