I graduated in 1982 and was the recipient of the John Rose Award.  I remember having no knowledge of who this person was or his importance in the community.  I have since realized his contributions and am grateful to be honored.

Although the award itself was for a nominal amount that had little financial impact, it did provide great value in pride and self-worth.

Thanks goes to the 1982 graduation class awards committee!

Many people in Olney that had the pleasure of knowing my dad, John Victor Rose, had only good things to say about him. One comment that is repeated from previous ERHS Drivers Ed students was his great sense of humor, easy going nature and his patience in difficult situations. The one thing he really enjoyed was basketball and coaching basketball. He was the captain of his high school basketball in Pekin, Illinois, and the team went to the state tournament in 1947. I never had the chance of benefitting from his wit and charisma especially when pertaining to his knowledge and experience about the sport. He had high hopes for me to succeed in basketball. However, that dream died within me the day he breathed his last breath. We will meet again, someday, in eternity, Dad. Brian John Rose; Class of 1974.

Brian,

I attended ERHS at the same time you did, so I had Coach Herrin for Drivers' Ed and never had the privilege of knowing your father. Thank God you had for as long as you did, but so sad that you lost him when you were so young and needed him to be with you as you grew up. I am sorry for you loss, those of us who had our parents all through childhood don't realize how much we need them until after they are gone. Both of my parents passed away many years ago, so I know you still miss your Dad and wish he could have watched you play basketball and teach you the game. I hope you have been blessed with good people and happy memories in your adult life.

Yes, it has been 50 years ago this day, Wednesday, February 7, 2018 when my dad passed away, a most tragic, very sad and a premature death. I still remember the long drive form St. Joseph’s Catholic School arriving home that morning, only to receive the horrific news that that my Dad that I had for 11 years was no longer with us. The shock and pain that I felt that day still lingers, even now, tears flow unmitigated down my face. I never had the chance to say “good-bye” to him or hear his laughter or his words of encouragement on the baseball field or to feel his strong arms around me one more time. Yes, a son’s love for his dad will always remain strong, no matter how many years have gone by, eternity I guess. Memories, sweet memories of my Dad is all that I have now, and I do cherish them so. This day brings great sadness but also great joy, knowing that I had a great Dad, even for a short time.

Brian, I had your dad as an English teacher and remember what a nice man he was. I'm sure you've grown into a very nice young man. Carol (Walker) Leamon

The one thing I remember is my Dad's Pekin High School basketball jersy number was 27. I was born on August 27, and my Dad died on Feburary 7, (27). So one can say that Dad's jersey number contained the two numbers related to the date that he died.  Coincidence?
