Ernest B. Hampton - Class Of 1941

Ernest B. Hampton Jr., 83, of Olney died Tuesday August 9, 2005 at his daughter's residence in Olney.  Graveside services at Haven Hill Cemetery in Olney with Reverend John Monroe officiating.

Mr. Hampton was born March 10, 1922 in Benton, the son of Ernest B. Hampton and Alta A. (Simmons) Hampton. He married Miriam Opal Blalock on December 11, 1946 and she survives.

Ernest, known as "Ernie" served as a metalsmith in World War II in the North Atlantic aboard the "Prairie", a destroyer tender. He later served aboard the battleship "Wisconsin" in the South Pacific. (M2 ~ U.S. Navy)

Mr. and Mrs. Hampton were pioneers in the discount store business. Their first store was located in Sandoval and was established in 1954, seven years ahead of Wal-Mart and K-Mart. A second store near Marion was opened in 1966.

He was baptized as a Baptist, but later supported the Worldwide Church of God.

Ernest is survived by his wife, Opal of Olney; a son, Calvin E. Hampton of Johnston City two daughters, Christine Hampton of Olney and Karla Jane Gibb of Franklin, Tenn.; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one older sister, Ruth Squires.
