Robert Vaughn

Charles Robert "Bob" Vaughn, 87, died Sunday, December 6, 2009, at Richland Memorial Hospital.  Burial in St. Joseph Cemetery in Olney with full military rites.

Mr. Vaughn was born February 17, 1922, in Olney, the son of Charles S. and Elsie (Ray) Vaughn. Known for his quick wit and humor, his kindness, service and support to Richland County, his greatest accomplishment, in his words, was marrying Elizabeth Ann Gassmann on December 4, 1943. They were married for 41 years until her death on January 23, 1985.

He was a lawyer, a longtime state's attorney of Richland County, chairman of the board of First National Bank in Olney, a longtime announcer of Olney Tigers football games and a staunch supporter of athletics in Richland County.

Mr. Vaughn's life was spent in Richland County except while he attended Milliken University, University of Illinois College of Law and his service in the United States Marine Corps during World War II.

He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Olney, Rotary, VFW, American Legion, Elks Club and the Republican Party.

Mr. Vaughn is survived by daughter, Ann Therese Cravens and her husband, Mike, of Springfield; a son, John Robert Vaughn, of Springfield; daughter, Carol Elizabeth Schafer and her husband, Robert, of Newton; son, Charles Bradley Vaughn, and his wife, Karen, of Olney; daughter, Kathleen Goudy Vaughn; sons, Allen Zean Vaughn and Ray Weber Vaughn and his wife, Marcia, all of Olney; and son, Frank Edward Vaughn, of San Francisco; 22 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Liffet; a daughter, Mary Gertrude; his parents; and a brother, Ray.
