Bob Stevens (Math 1970 -1989)

Robert E. Stevens, 73, of West Salem, died June 26, 2006 at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, Ind.  Burial in Lick Prairie Cemetery in Lick Prairie.

Mr. Stevens was born on February 6, 1933 in Wabash County, the son of Claude M. and Katie C. (Deischer) Stevens.

He was a 1st Lieutenant in the U.S. Army reserves from 1953-1955 and was a member of Lick Prairie Christian Church. He operated a grocery store in West Salem from 1955 to 1958. He graduated from Eastern Illinois University in 1961 and the University of Illinois in 1968. He taught school at Springfield public schools from 1961-1968 and in East Richland public schools from 1969 until his retirement in 1993. He farmed and raised registered Polled Herefords from 1967 to present and was mayor of West Salem from 1999 to 2003.

Mr. Stevens married Elizabeth Ridens on August 23, 1953 in Wabash County. She survives.

He is also survived by his daughter, Janet S. Porterfield; two sons, Ronald E. Stevens of West Salem and Roger E. Stevens of Olney; three grandchildren; one great-grandson.

Mr. Stevens was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Herman and Claude Stevens Jr. and sister, Edna Pattilo.
