Jim Pottorff

Jim Pottorff was born on October 31, 1932, to James Owen and Ethel (Robinson) Pottorff, in Barnhill, Ill. Jim went home to the Lord peacefully and comfortably, after a long and valiant fight with cancer on January 18, 2008.  He was surrounded by his loving family, who wished him Godspeed on his journey.

Jim is survived by his wife and soul mate, Jo Ann, one son, James Arthur (Cathy Hallam), three daughters, Laura (Mike) Martin, Julie (Randy) Jones, and Jennifer (Bill) Morrison. There are six grandchildren: Melissa Provines McDaniel (Tony), Sata Martin, Carey Sinclair (Ian), Chelsey Pottorff, Jordan Pottorff, and Cole Morrison. Lea Sinclair is a great-granddaughter and another great-granddaughter will be born to Sara Martin and fiancé, Chris Ferguson, in May.

Jim has a brother, John Pottorff (Ro) and a sister, Ann Bambrick (Mike) who also survive him.

Him graduated from Olney Township High School, Olney, Ill., in 1950. Following graduation, Jim joined the Air Force and was accepted into their Band School for intensive training and was dispatched to McChord Air Force Base in Tacoma, Wa., where he met and subsequently married Jo Ann Sprague on July 5, 1953. This July 5 would have been their 55th anniversary.

Jim was a banker and rose to the position of President, CEO and Chairman of the Board of Clay County State Band in Louisville, Ill., where he served for 18 years. He was also Vice President and Trust Officer of Olney Trust Bank for several years before accepting the position at the CCSB. Jim graduated from Wisconsin Graduate School of Banking and was elected to the Illinois Bankers Association Board of Directors, where he represented banking institutions in downstate Illinois for four years.

Jim was an outdoorsman and an avid golfer from high school until cancer took that passion away from him in the past year. He also was an award-winning bass fisherman and learned to love fishing the backwaters of the Gulf in Florida the past 10 years. He also enjoyed hunting in the Midwest, bringing the family many fine quail dinners.

Jim loved music and was a faithful tenor in the First Presbyterian Church choir in Olney. Terre Haute, Ind., and finally at Vanderbilt Presbyterian Church, in Naples, Ill. He was a lover of music, particularly great jazz, symphonic, choral and operas.

Jim enjoyed a very good quality of life. He loved great food and wine and being surrounded by family and good friends. He shared willingly and generously of himself. He will be remembered for his sense of fair play, his sense of humor, and his love of beauty and harmony.
