Jerry M. Michels

Jerry M. Michels, 80, of Olney, passed away on Tuesday, May 22, 2018 at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, IN.  He was born on January 21, 1938 in Olney, IL, the son of Myrl “Moon” and Ruth (Heap) Michels.  He married Sue (Schnautz) on November 10, 1984 in Olney, IL.  She survives.

Jerry was a general manager at Illinois Gas Company for 30+ years. He was an active member of the Olney Elks #926 and the Eagles Lodge #2549. Jerry enjoyed playing cards with his friends at the Petroleum Club and dominoes at the Elks. He served on several boards including the Olney/Noble Airport, Workforce One, and RCDC during the time in which Wal-Mart DC and the Lawrenceville prison were brought to this area. Jerry enjoyed watching sports of all kinds but was passionate about STL Cardinals baseball and U of I basketball. He took pleasure in keeping up with his grandchildren through social media.

Jerry is survived by his wife, Sue Michels of Olney; daughters, Julie Roberts and husband Greg of St. Petersburg, FL; Cathy Yockey of St. Petersburg, FL; and Lori Barger and husband Ed of Olney; son, Greg Michels of Olney; 5 Grandchildren, 7 Great grandchildren; brother, Jim (Kathy) Michels of Olney; sister, Judy Lawrence of Glenview, IL; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; granddaughter, Tera Bonds; and step-son, Phillip Schnautz.

A visitation will be held from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Friday, May 25, 2018 at the Kistler-Patterson Funeral Home in Olney.  A funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, May 26, 2018 at the Kistler-Patterson Funeral Home in Olney.

Mike E. Murray (1955)

Jerry organized all of our Class of 1955 reunions and kept the local Elks lodge going through good times and hard ones.  He will be missed by his many friends.  Mike Murray MD

So, so sorry. Condolences to his family. We of the class of' '55 owed him for the pleasure of being given the opportunity to renew old friendships every five years for as Mike Murrray pointed out earlier, Jerry was the one that kept it going. More than that he was a good friend. So,so sorry.
