Barbara E. Meyers (Geis)

Barbara Elizabeth (Meyers) Geis, 77 of Glen Ellyn, IL, passed away peacefully in Mountain Home, AR on August 17, 2017.

Barbara is survived by her two children, Karl Geis (Michelle) of Salt Lake City, UT, and Karen McGehee (Trevor) of Mountain Home, AR, and her four grandchildren: Nathan, Natalie, Jacob, and Andrew McGehee.

She is preceded in death by her husband, George William (Bill) Geis of Glen Ellyn, IL; her parents Harold and Esther (Knipker) Meyers of California, MO; and her brother Robert Baer.

Barbara was born on December 31, 1939 in Detroit, MI and grew up in Olney, IL. She attended the University of Illinois, where she received a bachelor's degree in music education and a master's degree in music. She was a member of both the University's Concert Band and Concert Choir. While at the University, Barbara was recognized for her high academic achievements, including the University Honors (Bronze Tablet). She was also a member of the Mortar Board and was the president of Kappa Delta sorority.

She married a fellow music major from Illinois, George William (Bill) Geis, in 1964, and the couple soon began their teaching careers in the Chicago suburban school districts.

In 1971, Barbara joined the music department of College of DuPage.  For over 25 years she inspired students to pursue a life of learning.

She will be remembered as a gracious and caring friend, mother, and grandmother, a dedicated wife, and a wonderful musician.

A memorial service held at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Villa Park, IL.

Barbara was a gracious lady and a great friend. I never heard her utter an ill word to or about anyone.

She had a towering intellect.  A superb clarinetist and pianist, she performed the very difficult Rhapsody In Blue playing both instruments with the ERHS band on several occasions.  Other times, she played piano and George Highsmith or Barbara Green played clarinet.

She won many medals performing at State Band Championships.  Her mother related to me one day, the difficulty of being a pianist at her level because all pianos have different actions and feels.  Barbara could rise above that challenge.

With Sue Jackson and Judy Petty, Barbara Meyers sang in an wonderful girls' trio, performing many of the hit songs of the day.

We, the world, have lost an angel and Heaven gained a glorious soul.

True, all of the above from David M, but don't forget that Vivian Frost sang with the girls' trio many times.  Just occasionally they needed an alto.  Judy P

David, you described Barbara so perfectly!  In recent years, Barbara, Marilyn Arnold and I met up for dinner a few times a year as we all lived in the Chicago area.,  Barbara was always kind, considerate and fun, and always looked exquisite.  I was out of town or I would certainly have gone to her memorial serice in Villa Park.  She and Bill were active members at that church for many years.  She will be missed!  Carolyn Michels Hilk

excelling in every thing she did, MG

Barbara and I became friends at a young age while singing  at "our church."  She played the organ; I led the singing for Sunday School. We attended  church camp together several years.  I always admired Barbara  for    her devoted attitude to every challenge facing her, her natural intelligence excelling in everything she did, and her acceptance of everyone  just as they were.  I don't believe I ever heard her say anything negative about anyone.  She was a "true friend."  She will  be missed at our reunions as well as at several get-togethers in Chicago.  We have many fond memories of her as she is at peace in heaven making beautiful music for everyone at her side.  ðŸ’•  Juldine Scherer Maloney Olsen

I agree with all the comments above.    Barbara was one of the most considerate and kind people I know.   Her talents were many.  She sang at our wedding, what beautiful memories we have of her.   She will definitely be missed.   May she rest in Peace.     Linda & Dave Green
