Growler - OHS08 Yearbook

The Growler

1908 Olney High School Yearbook

Donated to TAC by Helen Mullinas Smith, OTHS

With great pleasure, I share today a very old yearbook.  It is the gift of Helen Smith who sent me her copy of the Olney High School yearbook of 1908.  Let me briefly share some details about the 105-year-old annual.  It is in very poor condition physically. but it is a source of valuable information we'd normally never have.

Facts:

69 pages

Paper cover bound by string.

The title page notes that this issue is "Vol 1" "May No.1" published by the Class of 1908.  Printed by the Times Printing Co.

The first five pages feature administrators.  Page four shows the picture and list the name of first superintendent of the Olney Public Schools, Professor David Edmiston.  On the next page is a picture of the "Board of Education" followed by the names: D.Z Vernor, President; J.S. Freman; B.S. Murray, Secretary; A.L. Redman, H.I. Morse., Mrs. E.E. Edwards, and Mrs. A.J. Elliott.

The yearbook has few pictures.  Except for the editors, students are presented in class group pictures.  Their activities are presented in words and drawings.

Many pages remind me of an edited collection of writings, in this case of the seniors. Many of these are the usual school yearbook sort, that is, "Senior Wills," and class meeting minutes  -- and various forms of humor at the expense of other seniors and/or underclassmen.  One form of humor takes the form of business cards wherein the named person is offering some service:  One example was one written for Marie King "Successful Hair Bleaching Done Here."  Another form of humor is in the form of 'rubs' which is presented as "advertisements"   One example is that of "WANTED -- To exchange the pick of two handsome beauxfor a good mezzo-soprano voice, guaranteed not to flat."

The yearbook ends with 13 pages of ads.  This section of the yearbook has about as many pictures as the rest of the pages combined.

In summary, the seniors are behaving the way we know all seniors to do so.  They are 'lording' it over the underclassmen and  the rest of the world.  I was surprised that the sporting events comprised three pages and one picture only.  I was not surprised to note that one of the winning football captains was a Charles Van Cleve.  Many of you know that he went on to become the OTHS's winning football coach.

Thanks again, Helen.

Enjoy the yearbook.
