Richland County Community School District #1

September 9, 2015

Richland County High School has been recognized by Newsweek magazine as one of the top 500 high schools in the country that are beating the odds. Newsweek recently came out with its annual ranking of the top 500 high schools in the United States. In this ranking the more than 26,000 public high schools in the United States are evaluated on a range of criteria including college readiness measures, scores on standardized tests such as the ACT/SAT, and graduation rate. The list of schools that are beating the odds includes these same measurements but also considers socioeconomic factors such as the number of students considered at or below the poverty level.

Based on Newsweek’s ranking methodology of high schools that are beating the odds, Richland County High School is listed as number 397 nationally and number 21 in the state of Illinois. Richland County High School is also one of only two high schools in Illinois on the list that are south of Interstate 80. In the article from Newsweek, which can be found at, Richland County High School can be found listed as East Richland High School since the data was collected prior to the official name change that occurred in July.

Larry Bussard, Superintendent of Schools for the Richland County School District commented, “We are very pleased with this recognition. It is a testimony to the longstanding commitment our community has made to the children of Richland County.” The Richland County School District serves over 2,400 students in pre-Kindergarten through grade 12, with students attending Richland County Elementary School, Richland County Middle School, and Richland County High School. “From the board of education, to the teachers, administrators and support staff, to the parents and community, it takes a group effort to provide outstanding educational opportunities. This school district and the people of Richland County have shown that,” stated Mr. Bussard.
